The coastline between Aci Castello and Acireale in the province of Catania is particularly rich in black volcanic rock formations that are definitely very picturesque.
The atmosphere of old Greek myths and Homeric poems is still strongly felt along this stretch of coast that goes by the name Riviera dei Ciclopi.
As legend has it, the eight spectacular reefs that can be admired in this incredible corner of Sicily were thrown into the sea by the Cyclops Polyphemus in his last desperate attempt to stop Ulysses during his daring escape.
If you want to tour a place rich in history, charm and incredible naturalistic beauty, Riviera dei Ciclopi might definitely suit you.
My advice is to tour these places in the spring or fall, when the temperatures are more pleasant and it is also possible to save considerably on hotels and restaurants.
Aci Castello takes its name from the shepherd who fell in love with the nymph Galatea and the Norman castle built in 1076 on the lava rock that juts out into its sea.
Aci Trezza is the place where Giovanni Verga set his novel “I Malavoglia” (“The House by the Medlar Tree”) and the director Luchino Visconti shot “La Terra Trema” (“The Earth Trembles”), a genuine masterpiece of Italian neo-realism.
Acireale is the largest of the cities of the Riviera dei Ciclopi, and is about 17 kilometres north of Catania and is also well connected and easy to reach with both the regular bus service and train.
It is not only characterised by its coastal area, but also by its exquisite old town centre and its baroque style. It is a very well-known and highly regarded resort, but all in all, it is not extensively promoted on a tourist level. That means you can experience the most authentic side of Sicily.
In addition, I should equally mention that the amazing sea of the Riviera dei Ciclopi is part of the nature reserve of the Islands of the Cyclops, a veritable paradise with truly unique flora and fauna.
This place is capable of meeting the satisfaction of all types of travellers. It is the ideal location where history, legends, various kinds of fascination, rich food and wine tradition, incredible architectural and naturalistic beauties can be found.
